Luxury cruise line Seabourn has named singer and actress Elaine Paige the godmother of its newest cruise ship, the 600-passenger Seabourn Ovation.
Paige will name the ship on May 11 in Valletta, Malta. The location is a fitting one as the city of Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Seabourn partners with UNESCO to protect, as well as introduce passengers to, World Heritage sites around the world.
Musical actress Paige is also a fitting choice for a cruise line that partners with Sir Tim Rice and puts on a show featuring his musical numbers. Known as the “The First Lady of British Musical Theatre,” she was the original Eva Peron in “Evita”, Grizabella in “Cats” and Florence in “Chess”, and has headlined more musical theater hits than anyone of her generation.
“Elaine’s talents are boundless and, like Seabourn, the world is her stage and she is constantly seeking out new adventures,” said Richard Meadows, President of Seabourn, in a company statement. “She has created so many memories for her audiences, just as we do for our guests, on every voyage they take. We are thrilled to have such an accomplished performer launch Seabourn Ovation on her maiden voyage.”
Seabourn Ovation will spend its maiden season cruising Northern Europe and the Mediterranean between May and November 2018. Like its fleetmate, Seabourn Encore (christened by fellow singer and actress Sarah Brightman), Ovation will feature design by Adam D. Tihany, a Thomas Keller restaurant and a wellness program by Dr. Andrew Weil. It will also have Seabourn’s signature Seabourn Square and aft marina.
